My 9-year-old son is an old soul. He spends birthday money on office supplies. He gets excited about e-books. He recently received his own business cards as a gift, and it was like Christmas all over again.

But despite his maturity, he’s growing up in a generation that is deeply entrenched in technology and instant gratification. The images he sees on television are worse than any other generation before, and he can easily gain access to things I definitely don’t want him to have access to.

For those of us parenting children in this time, we desperately need God’s wisdom in raising them. More importantly, we need to pray for them as they grow, that God would give them the wisdom they need to make the right decisions, even in a world that might scoff at their values.

Here are a few prayers to get you started. Fill in the blanks with your child’s name and commit time in prayer for them today:

  1. Lord, give _________________ the wisdom to choose what is right. - But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all.– James 1:5 (GNT)
  2. Lord, guide ____________ in the way you have for him/her.- If you wander off the road to the right or the left, you will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road. Follow it.”– Isaiah 30:21 (GNT)
  3. Lord, surround _________ with friends who make good choices and have a heart for You. - Keep company with the wise and you will become wise. If you make friends with stupid people, you will be ruined. – Proverbs 13:20 (GNT)
  4. Lord, help _________________ to be honest, even when no one else is:May my goodness and honesty preserve me, because I trust in you. – Psalm 25:21 (GNT)
  5. Lord, protect ___________ from the temptations of sexual immorality and help him/her maintain purity in body, mind and spirit.God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality. Each of you should know how to live with your wife in a holy and honorable way, not with a lustful desire, like the heathen who do not know God. – 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (GNT)
