For many people, the holidays can be hard. But sometimes it’s even harder when the season is over.

Maybe you feel a sense of disappointment as you take down the lights on the Christmas tree or say goodbye to loved ones who live far away. Perhaps Christmas is difficult because it reminds you of hard times or the loss of loved ones.

The dark, cold winter weather can also be hard for many people after the holidays. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, about 4 to 6 percent of people have winter depression, and another 10 to 20 percent of people have mild seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that comes during the dark, winter months.

Whether you entered the new year feeling a sense of loss or deep pain, know that you can express your pain, your sadness, your longing to God. Here are several Psalms that can help you in these prayers.

  1. Psalm 28: 1, 2
"O Lord, my defender, I call to you. Listen to my cry! If you do not answer me, I will be among those who go down to the world of the dead. Hear me when I cry to you for help, when I lift my hands toward your holy Temple."
  2. Psalm 38: 9, 10
"O Lord, you know what I long for; you hear all my groans. My heart is pounding, my strength is gone, and my eyes have lost their brightness."
  3. Psalm 131
"Lord, I have given up my pride and turned away from my arrogance. I am not concerned with great matters or with subjects too difficult for me.Instead, I am content and at peace. As a child lies quietly in its mother's arms, so my heart is quiet within me. Israel, trust in the Lord now and forever!"
  4. Psalms 119: 57, 58
"You are all I want, O Lord; I promise to obey your laws. I ask you with all my heart to have mercy on me, as you have promised!"
  5. Psalms 109: 26, 27
"Help me, O Lord my God; because of your constant love, save me! Make my enemies know that you are the one who saves me."
