It’s easy to take the Bible for granted. There’s a Bible on the shelf of most homes, it’s in the drawer of hotels and Scripture references make it into literature, TV shows and movies.

But even though the Bible is woven throughout our lives and culture, we often forget the importance of God’s Word in our lives. We forget that the Bible is the book God uses to speak to our hearts, minds and actions.

That’s why on November 24, we will celebrate International Day of the Bible, an opportunity to join with Christians around the world in celebrating Scripture through the public reading of God’s Word. In order to commemorate the event, check out the passages below that remind us of the power of reading God’s Word together, as a community. And as you do, think of ways (including by subscribing the the devotional journey below) that you can celebrate the power of the Bible in your own life on November 24 and throughout the year.

  1. Deuteronomy 31:9-13. Before the Israelites FINALLY made it to the Promised Land, Moses reminded the people that they must continue into the future with a foundation on God’s Word.
  2. 2 Kings 22:8–23:3. After years of living under kings who had ignored God’s Word, Josiah discovered it and read it to his people.
  3. Jeremiah 36:1-10, 20-28. Even when others wanted to ignore God’s Law, Jeremiah made sure that they didn’t. He kept reminding them of the truth of God’s Word.
  4. Nehemiah 8:1-12. When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem after the exile, the priest Ezra made sure that they did it in view of God’s Word.
  5. Luke 4:16-30. Jesus read the words of the prophet Isaiah outside in the synagogue… to a mixed response.
  6. 1 Timothy 4:10-16; 2 Timothy 3:14-17. When Paul was away from Timothy, some of his most consistent advice was to keep reading God’s Word.
  7. Colossians 4:16; Revelation 3:14-22. Even though the New Testament wasn’t compiled in a convenient book, it was still important for believers to read the letters that circulated among the churches.

But don’t take my word for it. Read these passages for yourself in the daily devotional journeys below, and find a way to read Scripture publicly on November 24. You can also interact with Scripture in the following resources: BibleMinded (an app to memorize Scripture), Lectio Divina (an ancient practice of meditating on Scripture) and the Daily Bible Reading Guide (a one-year journey through Scripture).
