I recently stumbled upon a study that listed the most stressful situations people endure. Interestingly enough, four of the top five—death of a loved one, separation from a spouse, job loss and moving—require us to undergo a major life transition.

This makes sense, doesn’t it? Whether we’re learning to live alone or packing our belongings for a cross-country move, change is hard. Everything we once knew and loved suddenly passes us by—and we’re stuck trying to adjust to a new normal.

In my own life, I often enter change with an optimistic outlook. No matter the situation, I convince myself that I’ll be in good spirits as I pass through my period of uncertainty.

Sometimes I actually feel this way. But often times I don’t. Instead of embracing the newness, I spend hours wondering if I’ll ever adapt to my new surroundings. And I spend all my energy trying to overcome my stress and anxiety.

Have you ever felt this way? As you try to make sense of your transition, you find yourself fighting the growing ache in your stomach. But as you fight, you wonder if you’re just wasting your time. Will I ever feel normal again? When will all of this ever pass?

When change gets the best of you, I encourage you to open your Bible and meditate on these five reminders of God’s presence with you:

  1. Philippians 4:6 (CEV)
Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God.
  2. Joshua 1:9 (CEV)
I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
  3. Philippians 3:13 (CEV)
My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead.
  4. Psalm 18:2 (CEV)
You are my mighty rock,my fortress, my protector, the rock where I am safe, my shield, my powerful weapon, and my place of shelter.
  5. Hebrews 13:8 (CEV)
Jesus Christ never changes! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
