A week after Son of God opened in 3,000 movie theaters around the country, producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey hosted a Google + Hangout. During the live video conference, moderator Kathy Lee Gifford fielded questions from viewers in the hangout, as well as interviewed actors Diogo Morgado (who played Jesus) and Eduardo Verástegui, who dubbed the voice of Jesus in Spanish.

Both men shared their experiences; Morgado on an expansive set in Morocco and Verástegui in a small sound booth. Both settings were places of grace, faith and friendship.

KLG: How did you support each other on set?

DM: We know Jesus is loving. So how do I spread that love, share it and show it? As actors, we have certain processes to get us to [express those emotions]. But I was very tense. It was the scene of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey. It was a political scene; Jesus knew what he was doing that day. He was announcing himself as the Savior. I was very focused on the political nature of things [but not playing the emotions of the scene].

Roma is an actress and a producer, and she knew what I was dealing with. She said: “Don’t forget to smile and light up the world.” That was all I needed. Her words got me where I needed to be in the scene. We were all together as a family and we all supported each other. That was so necessary because we shot this film in the Morocco for six months.

KLG: Tell us what it was like to dub the voice of Jesus?

EV: When Mark and Roma asked me to dub the voice of Jesus in Spanish, I said yes. Jesus is the love of my life. He is the center of my life. I felt very unworthy. I didn’t know if I answered right by saying yes. I was fighting internally, but I had already given my word, so I couldn’t go back on it. I prayed and said, “Lord this is your movie. I don’t want them to hear my voice, but to hear yours. Allow your voice to shine through this donkey.”

I would watch the film over and over again in this little recording room, and sometimes I felt Jesus—not Diogo—talking directly to me. I would start crying.

This movie is for everyone who wants to see a leader who impacted the world like no other.
