For those caught in the darkness of depression, feelings of hopelessness and despair often overtake feelings of joy and fulfillment. Positive thoughts often yield to negative opinions. And the joy of company—of spending meaningful time with friends and family—often washes away, leaving the victim feeling alone and discouraged.

Though no two experiences with depression look the same, these uncommon and unfamiliar feelings can become crippling. But thankfully, the Bible enters into these moments of darkness and discouragement, offering hope for the peaks, the valleys and everything in-between.

As you go forth and share burdens with those closest to you, follow the Lord’s lead. Listen carefully and surround yourself in prayer. Prepare to trek through the darkness, hand-in-hand. And share the hope found in God’s Word, empowering others to experience the life-changing comfort of his love.

Keep these Bible verses in mind as you seek to support and encourage others:

  1. The Lord restores courage.
But you, O Lord, are always my shield from danger; you give me victory and restore my courage. – Psalm 3:3 (GNTD)
  2. The Lord renews the strength of those who trust in him.
But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak. – Isaiah 40:31 (GNTD)
  3. The Lord serves as a source of hope.
May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 15:13 (GNTD)
  4. The Lord rescues the hurting and the troubled.
I waited patiently for the Lord's help; then he listened to me and heard my cry. He pulled me out of a dangerous pit, out of the deadly quicksand. He set me safely on a rock and made me secure. – Psalm 40:1-2 (GNTD)
