It wasn't a matter of me not earning enough. It was a matter of me spending too much.

My occasional splurges were becoming more and more routine, and the credit cards I carried in my purse made it too easy for me to throw self-control out the window and overspend. Suddenly I wasn't just living paycheck to paycheck—I was in debt from balances I could not pay in full. I was stressed out and ashamed.

How did I let it get that far?

I knew I didn't need more things, but I desired them. After many years of cutting back while my husband and I raised our family, my focus suddenly became about me. I was working hard and looking to indulge myself. What I didn't count on was the angst and regret I would feel when I wasn't able to cover the bills at the end of the month.

My indulgence didn't bring me happiness or contentment. Instead, the mismanagement of my finances stressed me out.

But I only had to open my Bible to be reminded of where true happiness comes from: an abiding faith in Jesus Christ. I remembered what Psalm 23 tells me, that The Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need. No matter what my bank account looks like, the Lord can be counted on to bring peace and contentment through his Word.

Have you ever looked for contentment in material things and found disappointment instead? If your answer is "yes", reflect on these Bible verses with me to discover God's peace:

Philippians 4:12-13

"I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. I have the strength to face all conditions by the power that Christ gives me."

Isaiah 26:3

"You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you."

Psalm 16:11

"You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever."

Philippians 4:19

"And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs."
