I’ve spent most of my life building a “road map” of hopes, dreams and expectations. I’ve planned the jobs I need to build a successful career. I’ve planned when I want to start a family (and adopt a dog). And I’ve planned the money I need to buy my first house.

But I’m starting to wonder if this planning is actually productive. Despite my best intentions, my career has run into roadblocks, my savings goals have proven unrealistic and my desire to start a family has changed countless times in the past year.

And this scares me. Why? Because when I stop planning, I start fretting about the future—and all the uncertainty that lies ahead. If I don’t advance in my career, will I be able to provide for my family? If I don’t save now, will I be able to buy the right house in the right neighborhood?

The more I think about these fears, the more I long for control. And the more I long for control, the more I frantically plan an unrealistic, stress-free future. But in these moments, God often reminds me of Proverbs 19:2, which reads: “People may plan all kinds of things, but the Lord's will is going to be done” (GNTD).

Today, tomorrow and into the future, I want to do a better job of trusting God. And I want to do a better job of finding peace in him. If you’re wrestling with uncertainty today, I invite you to join me in meditating on God’s Word:

  1. Proverbs 3:5-6 (GNTD)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know.  Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.
  2. Matthew 6:34 (GNTD)
So do not worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.
  3. Isaiah 26:3 (GNTD)
You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you.
  4. Psalm 27:23-34 (GNTD)
The Lord guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him. If they fall, they will not stay down, because the Lord will help them up.
