The phrase “when it rains, it pours” often holds true, doesn’t it? While minding our own business, something unexpected gets in our way. And that something leads to something else. And that something else leads to something else. Suddenly, the life we once knew has been completely interrupted.

Have you been here before? A distracted driver crashes into your bumper. You accidently overdraft your bank account three times in three days. A close friend takes a job 2,000 miles away. Your roof leaks after a storm and causes $5,000 of damage. Your boss resigns, leaving your position up in the air.

In a matter of weeks, your day-to-day security has vanished. You miss your friend’s support, fear your professional future and wonder if your bank account will ever recover. And all of this makes you feel anxious.

When navigating seasons like this one, I typically enter “problem solver” mode, working to regain control of my life as quickly and effortlessly as possible. But in the midst of my frantic behavior, I often forget to take my fear and anxiety to God in prayer. And I often forget to rely on his Word for peace and hope.

If your life has spiraled out of control, I invite you to meditate on these four Bible verses with me:

  1. Isaiah 26:3 (GNTD)
You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you.
  2. Matthew 11:28-30 (GNTD)
Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light.”
  3. Romans 15:13 (GNTD)
May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.
  4. Nahum 1:7 (GNTD)
The Lord is good; he protects his people in times of trouble; he takes care of those who turn to him.
