I am an amateur multitasker. I prefer to focus on one task at a time and complete that one task well. But throughout my life, I’ve navigated seasons when my “one step at a time” methodology lets me down. Seasons when I arrive at work early to tackle my to-do list, only to spend precious time texting my wife about our leaky sink, paying bills on my lunch break and responding to emails on my way to the subway.
While I finally climb into my bed, I struggle to slow down and find rest. Have you been here before?
Torn between tackling the tasks before you—picking up your son at soccer practice, shopping for groceries, calling the cable company about your irregular bill—and taking care of yourself, you feel overwhelming pressure to complete the responsibilities ahead. So you press on, deprived of energy, sleep and motivation.
You know you’ll crash at some point. But for now, your agenda controls you, leaving you trapped in a chaotic season of life. I can’t do it anymore, you think to yourself. There’s no way I’ll sustain this pace. I have no margins. And I have no energy. I desperately need a nap.
If you feel consumed by a busy schedule today, I encourage you to crack open your Bible and turn to Scripture for peace, hope and perseverance. These four Bible verses will get you started:
- Matthew 11:28-29 (GNTD)
“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest.” - James 1:12 (GNTD)
Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him. - Zephaniah 3:17 (CEV)
The Lord your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love. - Isaiah 41:10 (CEV)
Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Don’t tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong, as I protect you with my arm and give you victories.
