I’m the kind of person who loves to peer over the horizon and think about the future. I often feel lured into daydreams, wondering how I can save more money, travel to more places and build a better, more exciting life.

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with this future-focused mindset. But recently,  I’ve noticed one of the drawbacks: discontentment. When I daydream, I think about a life I’m not presently living, one where all my problems, questions and concerns have been resolved. It’s an appealing life. But it makes me feel anxious and antsy. And it makes me question my current situation: Is this really the life I imagined? Am I missing out on something greater?

Have you been here before?

Whether you’re searching for a spouse, trying to escape a dead-end job or working to pay off loans you wish you never took on, you can’t help but peer longingly into the future. What does it hold for me? you think to yourself. Will I ever marry? When will I finally get on with my career and find a better job?

You’re ready for a life with fewer questions and more answers—the kind of life you keep picturing in your head.

If you can relate, I invite you to join me in meditating on God’s Word. These four Bible verses will get us started:

  1. Colossians 3:15 (GNTD)
The peace that Christ gives is to guide you in the decisions you make; for it is to this peace that God has called you together in the one body. And be thankful.
  2. Psalm 55:22 (GNTD)
Leave your troubles with the Lord, and he will defend you; he never lets honest people be defeated.
  3. Philippians 4:11-12 (GNTD)
And I am not saying this because I feel neglected, for I have learned to be satisfied with what I have. I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little.
  4. Matthew 6:33 (GNTD)
Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things.
