Six months ago, my roommate began the frightening journey of a new job search. Her company announced their departure from New York City; they were purchased by a larger company and planned to relocate to Miami. This was quite a shock to many of her New York City-based coworkers, most of whom had been with the company since they launched more than ten years ago. Many jobs were eliminated—and hers was one of them.

In the midst of her transition, my friend has experienced a roller coaster of emotions: sadness, confusion, anxiety about the future. She has to remind herself daily that God has a plan for her life. Even though her future seems insecure, she knows God is in control.

Many of us can identify with her struggle, as enduring the unknown can feel daunting. We wonder if we’ll have to settle for a job that simply pays the bills. We worry about our finances, our living situation and our loved ones. Each of these circumstances can generate all-consuming anxiety.

In our own lives, we have a tendency to quickly take things into our own hands and start making decisions without waiting on God or asking for his guidance. We constantly want to take action before him, especially when we feel scared and find ourselves in a vulnerable position—like when we’re in the middle of a job search.

So, whether you’ve been looking for a job for a long time, your last day at your current workplace is approaching or you’re just unhappy in your position, remember that God sees you. He cares about every facet of your life, even your job situation.

Today, find comfort in his promises and his love. Use the prayer below as a guide when you’re feeling frustrated—and then recite the verses below as you search for peace. Remember that God is with you, even in the middle of a job search.

“Lord, I know you are a God of order and that you promise me a peace that surpasses all understanding. I ask for that peace now, for peace and patience as I journey through this job search. Help me see the opportunity you have for me, give me energy and a positive spirit. Don’t allow me to become discouraged and please remind me that you are my father and want only the best for me. Please give me the job that is best, both exciting for me and honoring to you. Amen.”
