Heartbreak hurts. If you’ve ever had a broken heart, you understand why that term is used — it often feels like your heart is disintegrating into tiny pieces. Perhaps you put on a happy face, because the show must go on. But then the night comes, and you find yourself lying in bed, tears streaming down your face and the weight of the hurt heavy on your chest. You wonder if you’ll ever make it to the other side of the pain, and worst of all, you feel completely alone.
Jesus knew this feeling. When he hung on the cross, exposed, beaten and betrayed by those who loved, he felt very alone. The Bible says he cried out “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” (Matthew 27:46)
Maybe your husband left you. Maybe your parents abandoned you, or your child won’t speak to you. Maybe you lost someone you loved, or you’re suffering from a life-threatening illness. As hard as these situations are, we can find comfort in God’s Word! He never promised a life without heartache, but His Word gives us promises to hold on to when those times come.
- God is near.
The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. – Psalm 34:18 - God will strengthen you.
You made me suffer a lot, but you will bring me back from this deep pit and give me new life. – Psalm 71:20 - God is with you.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. – Isaiah 43:1 - Hard times won’t last forever.
I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us. – Romans 8:18 - God has a plan for your life.
I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. – Jeremiah 29:11 - Don’t give up.
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. – 2 Corinthians 4:8-10
