You know the signs all too well. A pit forms in your stomach. You lose your ability to focus. And your mind begins to wander uncontrollably, fixating on your fears, worries and concerns. You feel overwhelmed by anxiety—and you can't seem to find a way out.
Have you ever felt unsettled by anxious thoughts? Maybe, when you first notice the signs, you begin to assess your circumstances. Why am I feeling so anxious? Sure, I've got a lot going on, but should this situation really leave me feeling this nervous? My anxiety will pass soon—right?
After moving to a new town , you feel as though you’ve lost your sense of security. A pit begins to fill your stomach. As your son heads to college, you wonder if he’ll excel in school and adequately prepare for a successful career. You can’t seem to focus on anything but your son. After years of struggling to make ends meet , you realize you need a new job to meet your family’s financial needs. Your mind begins to wander uncontrollably.
In these moments, when specific thoughts, events and circumstances trigger your anxiety, stay connected to God through his word. Meditate on messages of peace, hope and perseverance. And leave all your anxieties with him.
The five prayers will get you started:
- Lord, help me rest in your care.
Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.– 1 Peter 5:7 (GNTD) - Lord, help me experience your peace.
Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. – John 14:27 (GNTD) - Lord, help me feel your presence.
Remember that I have commanded you to be determined and confident! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for I, the Lord your God, am with you wherever you go.”– Joshua 1:9 (GNTD) - Lord, help me experience joy.
May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.– Romans 15:13 (GNTD) - Lord, help me to seek you at all times.
Your way is perfect, Lord, and your word is correct. You are a shield for those who run to you for help.– 2 Samuel 22:31 (GNTD) - Lord, give me strength when I feel weak.
But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak.– Isaiah 40:31 (GNTD)
