Sometimes figuring out a good new year’s resolution is just as hard as keeping it. What will help the people around me? What will help me live in a better way? What can I make into a life habit?

Look no farther than Proverbs. It is chock full of practical advice that makes for some great New Year’s resolutions. So this year, in addition to adding the usuals to your new year’s list, try some of these resolutions from the book of Proverbs.

As Proverbs 2:2-5 says, “Listen to what is wise and try to understand it. Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight. look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure. If you do, you will know what it means to fear the LORD and you will succeed in learning about God” (GNTD). That is a great resolution on its own!

Here are a few more to add to your list:

  1. Think before you speak.
"Proud fools talk too much; the words of the wise protect them.” --Proverbs 14:3 (GNTD)
  2. Put integrity before making money.
"If you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation.” —Proverbs 22:1 (GNTD)
  3. Care for the poor.
"Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it.” —Proverbs 22:9 (GNTD)
  4. Be kind and honest.
"Be kind and honest and you will live a long life; others will respect you and treat you fairly.” —Proverbs 21:21 (GNTD)
  5. Do your best at work and home.
"Show me someone who does a good job, and I will show you someone who is better than most and worthy of the company of kings.” —Proverbs 22:29 (GNTD)
  6. Trust God’s opinion, not the opinion of people.
"It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.” —Proverbs 29:25 (GNTD)
  7. Don’t gossip.
"Without wood, a fire goes out; without gossip, quarreling stops.” —Proverbs 26:20 (GNTD)
