Finally—a day off with nothing to do, I thought to myself. I had been looking forward to this day for what seemed like eternity.
I woke up refreshed, poured a cup of coffee, and plopped down on the sofa. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, I felt overcome with anxiety. All the old insecurities and worries came flooding back. I began to pick apart every awkward thing I'd managed to say in the past week. Every witty remark I'd failed to launch. Every brilliant idea I never captured. If only I was more outgoing, I told myself. Maybe if I dressed better. Or learned a foreign language. Or took up gardening. If I could just be more interesting.
I felt like a middle-schooler trapped in a woman's body, vexing over whether I was cool enough, whether anybody really liked me.
Have you ever felt uncomfortable in your own skin?
One day, you feel completely fine. And then, left alone, you're flooded with unwelcome thoughts that threaten your identity.
As I've grown in my relationship with God, I've found a new foundation for my identity: an identity rooted in him. I can rest in the knowledge that he loves me and made me purposefully. Even when I feel like I'm not good enough, he calls me his child.
I'd like to say that insecurities no longer bother me, but they still do. Yet now—when I worry about who I am—I can hold onto the truths written in God's Word. If you feel unhappy with who you are today, I encourage you to dig into these truths with me. Here are three verses to get us started:
You are created in God's image. He made you who you are.
But you are our father, Lord. We are like clay, and you are like the potter. You created us, – Isaiah 64:8 (GNTD)
You are a child of God. He calls you his own.
See how much the Father has loved us! His love is so great that we are called God's children—and so, in fact, we are. This is why the world does not know us: it has not known God. – 1 John 3:1 (GNTD)
God made you and prepared you. You have a purpose.
God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do.– Ephesians 2:10 (GNTD)
