It’s going to be another one of those nights, I think to myself. I can’t sleep and my mind is racing, sometimes stuck in neutral. I’m not really thinking about anything in particular. It’s 3:00 a.m. I’m wide awake and wondering why is this happening—again.
My anxiety lives just below the surface of the moments when I’m awake and bubbles up around 3 am. These bubbles form questions in a “to worry about” list. Money? No, not tonight. Door handle I’ve been meaning to fix but haven’t quite gotten to yet? Not that either. Wonder why everything can’t work according to my plan? Yes, that’s it this time.
I struggle through another night of hoping the white noise from my fan will lull me to sleep. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes talking to God in prayer works, but sometimes my thoughts derail my efforts. It’s 4:30 a.m. I have to get up soon and I know I’ll experience that groggy feeling.
I struggle in these sleepless nights, and after them, my body and my soul need to be refreshed. Ironically, the peace I get comes from the alarm on my phone that point me toLamentations 3:22-23. Every morning I see this daily reminder. No matter how restless the night had been, a new day carries with it a promise of God’s faithfulness and mercy.
If you’re wrestling with your own anxiety today, I invite you to open your Bible and meditate on reminders of the peace and joy you have in Christ. These four Bible verses will get you started:
Lamentations 3:22-23 (GNTD)
The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise.
Luke 1:46-47 (GNTD)
My heart praises the Lord; my soul is glad because of God my Savior.
Psalm 23:2b-3a (CEVD)
You lead me to streams of peaceful water, and you refresh my life.
John 4:14 (GNTD)
[Jesus says]: “But those who drink the water that I will give them will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give them will become in them a spring which will provide them with life-giving water and give them eternal life.”
