Growing up, one of my biggest heroes was Charlie Brown. Yes, Good Ol' Charlie Brown—Charles M. Schulz's classic "Peanuts" character.
As a kid, I owned a book of "Peanuts" cartoons called, "My Anxieties Have Anxieties." The title comes from the punch line of a classic strip. With a gloomy look on his face, Charlie Brown informs Linus, "I worry a lot about school.… I also worry about my worrying so much about school.… My anxieties have anxieties."
At age 10, I could relate to Charlie Brown; my worries felt the same as his. I too worried about school. I worried about my friendships. I worried about whether or not certain girls in my third grade class liked me.
I'm not a kid anymore, but I still resonate with Charlie Brown's humorous confession. When I became an adult, I simply graduated to adult worries: I'm one year into a new job. In a few months, my wife will give birth to our first child. A nagging voice keeps telling me that I need to balance our budget. And I'm pretty sure the old car in our driveway needs to be replaced.
All these little things in life—even the really good things—can produce anxiety. Left unchecked, fear and stress gnaw at our hearts. Burdened by worry, we struggle to face the future with courage and hope.
Maybe you're like me; maybe you can relate to Charlie Brown. If your heart is adrift on a restless sea of fear and anxiety, you can seek peace and comfort on the solid ground of Scripture. Here are six Bible verses that remind me that God is a God of peace. You can read through them and ask the Lord to calm your troubled heart through the power of his Word:
John 20:19 (GNTD)
It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. 'Peace be with you," he said.
Psalm 29:11 (GNTD)
The Lord gives strength to his people
and blesses them with peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (GNTD)
A child is born to us!
A son is given to us!
And he will be our ruler.
He will be called, "Wonderful Counselor,"
"Mighty God," "Eternal Father,"
"Prince of Peace."
Matthew 11:28-30 (GNTD)
"Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light."
John 16:33 (GNTD)
"I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!"
1 Corinthians 14:33 (GNTD)
…God does not want us to be in disorder but in harmony and peace…
