I don’t always see stress coming. Sometimes, on the heels of a chaotic day, I can feel the classic symptoms—fatigue, frustration, impatience—starting to surface. Other days, I feel completely blindsided by stress. Seemingly out of nowhere, I start feeling anxious, agitated, tired and uncertain. Where did my relaxing day go? I think to myself.
On these days, I often talk down my stress. I’m just feeling off today. It’ll all go away soon. I’ll be fine. But my efforts rarely prove fruitful. In the end, I typically feel as anxious, agitated, tired and uncertain as ever.
Are you stressed today?
Maybe you’ve felt close to losing it for days. Your son and daughter won’t stop fighting, your to-do list won’t stop growing and your boss won’t stop criticizing your work. You’re trying hard to keep your cool, but don’t know how much more chaos you can handle.
Or maybe an unexpected event has triggered your stress. A frustrating interaction at work, an unbudgeted expense, an illness in the family—regardless of the trigger, you can’t help but feel anxious and overwhelmed. And you can’t help but wonder when your stress will finally pass.
In these moments, you can turn to Scripture for reminders of God’s peace and comfort. These five Bible verses will get you started:
John 14:27 (GNTD)
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.”
Isaiah 26:3-4 (GNTD)
You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever; he will always protect us.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (GNTD)
"But I will bless the person who puts his trust in me. He is like a tree growing near a stream and sending out roots to the water. It is not afraid when hot weather comes, because its leaves stay green; it has no worries when there is no rain; it keeps on bearing fruit."
Psalm 57:1-2 (GNTD)
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, because I come to you for safety. In the shadow of your wings I find protection until the raging storms are over. I call to God, the Most High, to God, who supplies my every need.
Isaiah 40:31 (GNTD)
But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak.
