While strolling through the park, you pause to sit on a bench and watch the scene around you. A family playing with their dog, a couple sharing a romantic moment, a group of friends tossing a Frisbee—everyone seems so joyful and put together.

But you don't feel this way. You're juggling a broken family relationship, a dead-end job and growing credit card debt. You haven't slept well in weeks, thanks to the persistent ache in your stomach. And you're tired of walking through the park alone, watching everyone else enjoy their lives.

In this moment, you feel like David in Psalm 69, who calls out to God: "Don't hide yourself from your servant; I am in great trouble—answer me now! Come to me and save me; rescue me from my enemies" (Psalm 69:17-18, GNTD).

Eventually, you gather your things, rise from the bench and walk home, hoping to somehow escape the fear and anxiety that has tormented you.

If you feel hopeless today, I encourage you to meditate on God's Word, seeking him for peace, perseverance and hope. These four Bible verses will get you started:

  1. Psalm 121:1-2 (GNTD)
I look to the mountains; where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
  2. John 14:27 (GNTD)
"Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid."
  3. John 16:33 (GNTD)
"I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suffer. But be brave! I have defeated the world!"
  4. Romans 15:13 (GNTD)
May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.
