Recently, on my walk to work, I witnessed a classic road rage moment gone wrong. While attempting to beat a red light, a car careened around a corner and nearly collided with a bicyclist. Though the driver clearly seemed at fault, he laid on his horn, threw his arm out the window and nearly knocked the cyclist to the ground, all before speeding down the street.
Admittedly, my first reaction was to affirm myself. Look at that guy, I thought to myself. I would never get that angry over something so ridiculous. It was his fault to begin with!
But later that day, I found myself fuming over something trivial. I knew I had no reason to hold on to my frustration. Yet as the day carried on, I began to feel more and more agitated. Before I knew it, my small annoyance had evolved into a bigger problem.
Can you relate?
Maybe something small set you off, as it did with me. A sales associate moved too slow, your family made you late for work, a co-worker offered a wry comment, a friend cut you off mid-story—regardless of the situation, you left feeling angry and annoyed.
Or maybe you feel trapped in a long-term feud. A friend or family member has crossed you for the last time. And now, you’re not sure if you’ll ever overcome your anger.
In these moments, you can turn to Scripture for reminders of God’s peace. These four Bible verses will get you started:
Matthew 5:9 (GNTD)
Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children!
John 14:27 (GNTD)
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.”
1 Peter 5:7 (GNTD)
Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.
Matthew 11:28-29 (GNTD)
“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest.”
