Often described as creatures of habit, we walk through our daily lives seeking a familiar rhythm: wake up, brew coffee, drive to work, complete key tasks, drive home, make dinner, prepare for bed—the cycle has become engrained in our minds.

Yet with some regularity, this rhythm becomes interrupted by life. Sometimes we oversleep, hurry through our morning routine and enter the workday feeling rushed and disorganized; sometimes our boss offers nothing but criticism, leaving us searching for positive affirmation; and sometimes our commute turns into a waiting game, forcing us to navigate our way through never-ending traffic jams and stoplights. Whatever speed bumps we encounter, life promises to overthrow our routine, each and every day.

While we can do nothing to stall these inevitable stressors, we can choose to find peace, just as the Lord promises in John 14:27: “Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid” (GNT). In these circumstances, the Lord empowers us to overcome the unexpected: late starts, challenging bosses, long drives and rest of our “daily routine.”

So today, as you encounter your own peaks and valleys, turn to scripture. Meditate on the words of the Lord as He provides an escape from everyday stress. And put your trust in Him, relying on His peace to maintain your rhythm.

These five Psalms will get you started:

1. Psalm 16:8 (GNTD)

I am always aware of the Lord's presence;
he is near, and nothing can shake me.

2. Psalm 34:18 (GNTD)

The Lord is near to those who are discouraged;
he saves those who have lost all hope.

3. Psalm 9:9-10 (GNTD)

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a place of safety in times of trouble.

Those who know you, Lord, will trust you;
you do not abandon anyone who comes to you.

4. Psalm 46:1 (GNTD)

God is our shelter and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.

5. Psalm 32:7-8 (GNTD)

You are my hiding place;
you will save me from trouble.
I sing aloud of your salvation,
because you protect me.
