As a singer ministering to congregations that mourn, I am always struck by the universal look of sorrow I see among people who bid farewell to their loved one at a funeral service.

Grief wears one face.

There’s a blankness, a darkness, a somber look that transcends time, gender, profession, aspiration, ethnicity.

Although I believe in the hope of the Resurrection, I can’t help but be affected by that face of grief, just as Jesus was at the tomb of Lazarus.

But we are not alone in our grief. God walks with all those who mourn and is a constant source of strength--even in the most difficult circumstances.

We offer the following Scripture verses to comfort you. Meditate on them and share the post with others. Know that God is with you and will help you through your darkest hours.

  1. “In my trouble, I called to the Lord for help; I called to my God for help. In his temple, he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help.” Psalm 18:6 (GNTD)
  2. “O Lord, you give me light; you dispel my darkness.” Psalm 18:28 (GNTD)
  3. “Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me.” Psalm 23:4(a) (GNTD)
  4. “God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and mountains fall into the ocean depths; even if the seas roar and rage and the hills are shaken by the violence.” Psalm 46:1-3 (GNTD)
  5. “Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life.” Psalm 119:50 (GNTD)
  6. “Do not be afraid—I am with you! I am your God—let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect and save you.” Isaiah 41:10 (GNTD)
