When I first saw the Pixar hit “Inside Out,” I couldn’t help but notice how accurately and comically the film portrays our emotions. While following a young girl named Riley, “Inside Out” brings joy, sadness, fear and anger to life as animated characters. Each character has a unique personality. And each character plays a vital role in Riley’s everyday experiences.
Yet as I watched “Inside Out,” I was reminded of how fear, in particular, can dictate our actions. Pixar’s “fear” character constantly lives on edge, calculating the worst-case scenario for every situation Riley encounters. He runs himself ragged trying to avoid any and all discomfort.
Sometimes, I find myself living this way. Do you?
Maybe you’re a constant worrier. No matter where you go, you find something that triggers your anxiety. You wonder if your kids are safe. You wonder if your job is secure. And you wonder if you’ll ever stop worrying.
Or maybe you recently endured a tragic event. Overcome with grief, you have no idea how to respond or where to turn. You spend countless hours wondering if your life will ever be the same. You can’t help it; fear seems to dictate your every move.
In these moments, I encourage you to call out to God for peace and comfort. And I encourage you to open your Bible and meditate on reminders of his continual presence. These three prayers will get you started:
Lord, I’m overwhelmed with fear today. Help me find comfort and safety in you.
The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised. Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.– Psalm 23:1-4 (GNTD)
Lord, I crave your peace today. Calm my anxious heart.
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.– John 14:27 (GNTD)
Lord, I know I find my strength in you. Give me confidence and assurance.
The Lord alone is God; God alone is our defense. He is the God who makes me strong, who makes my pathway safe. He makes me sure-footed as a deer; he keeps me safe on the mountains.
