On my way to work this morning, I saw an elementary school-age boy carrying a book in one hand and a lunch bag in the other. He seemed to be daydreaming about something—maybe his favorite superhero, or his favorite baseball player. As we crossed paths, I found myself feeling a bit nostalgic. I remember those days. My greatest fear was spilling mustard on my pants at lunch.
But then I came to a deeper realization: I’m not that different than the ten-year-old version of myself. Why did I worry about spilling mustard on my pants? Because I feared what my classmates would think of me. I didn’t want to be seen as the misfit kid who couldn’t even eat lunch the right way.
Today, I struggle with the grown-up version of this fear. I’m scared to make mistakes at work because I want my co-workers to think I’m competent. I’m afraid to disappoint my friends because I want them to think I’m dependable. And I’m terrified of not being able to provide for my wife because I want her to think I’m smart and successful.
Can you relate?
Maybe you’re like me, and you fear negative judgment from others. Maybe you fear running out of money and having nowhere to go for support. Maybe you fear never finding a spouse to love and cherish. Or maybe you fear getting hurt, and go through life taking one cautious step after another.
Regardless of what keeps you awake at night, you can find messages of peace and hope in God’s Word. And you can call out to God for strength when you feel weak. These three prayers will get you started:
Lord, I’m overwhelmed with fear today. Give me your peace.
I have told you this, so that you might have peace in your hearts because of me. While you are in the world, you will have to suffer. But cheer up! I have defeated the world.– John 16:33 (CEV)
Lord, my mind is filled with anxious thoughts today. Help me experience hope.
Never give up. Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord. Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying. – Romans 12:11-12 (CEV)
Lord, I feel powerless against my fears. Protect me and give me strength.
Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Don’t tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong, as I protect you with my arm and give you victories. – Isaiah 41:10 (CEV)
