The storms of life don’t always take place in a boat. But they often feel like they rock your whole world. Crises can happen when you’re facing job uncertainty at work, worrying that your kids will rebel at home, or feeling lonely after moving to a new city.

During these tough times, you can find strength in the practical wisdom from Proverbs. From advice about money to relationships, Proverbs looks at the day-to-day facts of life and provides a dose of common sense. Reading these words of wisdom won’t make all your troubles will go away, but it can provide helpful guidance to help get you through the day. Let these words be reminders and encouragement to you in the midst of whatever you are facing on the rocky sea of life.

  1. Listen to the advice of your parents. (Proverbs 1:8, 9)
My child, pay attention to what your father and mother tell you. Their teaching will improve your character as a handsome turban or a necklace improves your appearance.
  2. Wisdom takes work, but it’s worth it. (Proverbs 2:3-5)
Yes, beg for knowledge; plead for insight.Look for it as hard as you would for silver or some hidden treasure. If you do, you will know what it means to fear the Lord and you will succeed in learning about God.
  3. Stay calm, and avoid losing your temper. (Proverbs 14:29)
If you stay calm, you are wise, but if you have a hot temper, you only show how stupid you are.
  4. Gentleness helps everyone stay calm. (Proverbs 15:1)
A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up.
  5. It can help to share joys and sorrows with friends and family (Proverbs 17:17)
Friends always show their love. What are relatives for if not to share trouble?
  6. The Lord (not money) is your true source of safety. (Proverbs 18:10, 11)
The Lord is like a strong tower, where the righteous can go and be safe. Rich people, however, imagine that their wealth protects them like high, strong walls around a city.
  7. Real friends are honest. (Proverbs 24:26)
An honest answer is a sign of true friendship.
