By nature, I get excited about the little things in life. Exploring new towns, meeting new people, eating at new restaurants—all of these experiences bring me joy. But as I’ve come to find, this excitement can backfire, leading me into a place of great disappointment.
Has this ever happened to you?
You invest in a promising romantic relationship, only to realize you’re not as compatible as you once thought. You spend months saving for a vacation, only to use your savings on a home repair instead. You attend counseling to manage your anxiety, only to find yourself feeling more anxious than ever before.
All of these situations start out hopeful. And then, often without warning, they come crashing down, leaving us feeling dejected when we once felt optimistic.
If you’re anything like me, the sting of this disappointment can last for days. I often question my role in the situation, wondering if I could have prevented my own misfortune with better planning, communication or due diligence. But sometimes, as I often conclude, disappointments just happen.
If you’re managing your own disappointment today, I encourage you to open your Bible and meditate on reminders of God’s continual presence. These four Psalms will get you started:
Psalm 34:18 (GNTD)
The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost hope.
Psalm 55:22 (GNTD)
Leave your troubles with the Lord, and he will defend you; he never lets honest people be defeated.
Psalm 42:11 (GNTD)
Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God.
Psalm 91:1-2, 4 (GNTD)
Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to him, “You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust…He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you.
