You wake up, hoping for a productive day. But you turn to check the time and realize you’ve accidentally slept in late. Even though you set two alarms (two alarms!), they never went off.
You toss off your covers and start shivering from the cold. You step onto what you think is the floor but is actually a pen you dropped the night before. You hop to the bathroom on one foot, nursing your pen-punctured heel. And when you reach for your shampoo in the shower, you discover that the bottle is empty. None of your clothes fit, the milk has gone sour, your kids refuse to get up for school and—to top it all off—it’s raining outside.
Today is not my day, you think. You seriously consider just going back to bed.
On days like this, it’s easy to feel like the world is against you. Like something goes wrong at every turn. Like you can’t accomplish the littlest task without being attacked. Like you should just give up.
When I feel like this, I don’t exactly want to dig into God’s Word. I’d rather stew and feel justified in my negative thoughts. But then God’s still, small voice prompts me to pray. And when I do, I think of how God’s character remains constant even when the world seems cruel. Even while I’m still holding onto my anger, God reminds me that his intentions for me are good.
If you’re feeling like every little thing is going wrong today, you can hold onto these truths in God’s Word:
- God is with you.
In my distress I called to the Lord;he answered me and set me free.
The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid;what can anyone do to me? – Psalm 118:5-6 (GNTD) - God is for you.
We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him,those whom he has called according to his purpose.…
In view of all this, what can we say? If God is for us, who can be against us? Certainly not God, who did not even keep back his own Son,
but offered him for us all! He gave us his Son—will he not also freely give us all things? – Romans 8:28, 31-32 (GNTD) - God will protect you.
God is our shelter and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken
and mountains fall into the ocean depths;
even if the seas roar and rage,
and the hills are shaken by the violence. – Psalm 46:1-3 (GNTD) - God will help you.
For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”Let us be bold, then, and say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” – Hebrews 13:5b-6 (GNTD)
