When my aunt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer seven years ago, we were all plunged into panic, fear, anxiety and sadness. She was young—only 49.

Her illness followed the typical course of many patients with her disease: surgery, chemo, radiation, more chemo and more radiation. Eventually, the treatments stopped working and cancer claimed her life just 1.5 years after her diagnosis.

As I walked with my aunt during her journey of illness, I learned some incredible things. I learned what it means to have faith. No matter how bad the news, my aunt Theresa never waivered in her belief that the Lord would take care of her.

I also learned the meaning of true Christian hope: At a time when Theresa was losing everything—her health, her life as she knew it—she was gaining a true sense of God's deep, abiding love for her.

We share the following verses to help you or a loved one cope with difficult life circumstances. Regardless of what those circumstances are, know that God is your shelter and your strength—always.

  1. "… but even when I am afraid, I keep on trusting you. … I trust you and am not afraid."
    See Psalm 56:3-4 (CEV)
  2. " … and when I was helpless, you saved me and treated me so kindly that I don't need to worry anymore."
    See Psalm 116:6-7 (CEV)
  3. "When I was really hurting, I prayed to the Lord. He answered my prayer and took my worries away. The Lord is on my side and I am not afraid."
    Psalm 118:5-6(a) (CEV)
  4. "In times of trouble, you will protect me."
    Psalm 27:5(a) (CEV)
  5. "Be brave and strong! Don't be afraid. … The Lord your God will always be at your side, and he will never abandon you."
    See Deuteronomy 31:6 (CEV)
  6. " … I am holding your hand, so don't be afraid. I am here to help you."
    See Isaiah 41: 13 (CEV)
  7. "… Why are you so frightened? Who do you doubt? Look at my hands and my feet and see who I am!"
    See Luke 24:38-39 (CEV)
