After living in New York City for 29 years, I made a difficult decision: I left my home! I stepped away from everything I had ever known—friends, family and familiarity—in hopes of exploring a world outside “The Big Apple”.
Filled with excitement over the endless possibilities ahead, I loaded all of my possessions on a moving truck and drove across the country until I reached Colorado. I discovered mountains, hiking, bright sunshine and lots of snow. It was exhilarating! But soon, my excitement and wonder was overshadowed by feelings of loneliness—especially around the holidays.
Not sharing this time of year with friends and family made me incredibly sad. I yearned for the meals we ate at Christmastime. I longed to hear my mom and aunt fighting over who made the better potato salad. And I missed the loud music and the cousins I only got to see during this time of year. While most people were feeling especially joyous during the holidays, I felt lonely.
Are the holidays hard for you? Maybe you feel lonely because you’re far away from family. Maybe you’re missing a loved one who is no longer around. Maybe your kids are all grown up, leaving you home alone. Or maybe you long for someone special to share the holidays with.
In these moments of deep loneliness, I strive to turn to God and his Word. Scripture assures me that even though I feel lonely, I am never alone.
If you are feeling lonely this holiday season, you can meditate on these five Bible verses:
- Deuteronomy 31:8 (GNTD)
The Lord himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid. - Joshua 1:9 (CEV)
I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go. - Psalm 27:10 (CEV)
Even if my father and mother should desert me, you will take care of me. - Psalms 25:16 (CEV)
I am lonely and troubled. Show that you care and have pity on me. - 1 Samuel 12:22 (GNTD)
The Lord has made a solemn promise, and he will not abandon you, for he has decided to make you his own people.
