Every family has quirks. The classic “my family is crazy” line can be used to describe just about every family on earth. But what happens when these quirks cause constant conflict? When drama starts at seven in the morning and doesn’t stop until sometime after midnight?
Maybe you have children with seemingly nothing in common. Your daughter plays two varsity sports, spends every possible moment with her friends and shines in social situations. Your son, on the other hand, excels in the classroom, craves alone time and would rather read than attend a high school football game. They fight daily, and their hostility toward one another has torn your family apart.
Or maybe you come from a broken family, and you have grown tired of bitter arguments and years of unspoken grudges. The scene always plays out the same way: one family member makes a passive-aggressive comment about another family member, who responds with harsh words. You try to help everyone get along. But without fail, the comments turn your gathering into a “he said, she said” fight. You wonder why you even visit your family anymore.
Do these situations sound familiar? No matter how hard you try to achieve peace, your family quirks lead to full-fledged drama.
In these moments, you can call out to God—and meditate on his Word—for peace, perseverance and rest. These six prayers will get you started:
- God, I’m tired of my family fighting. I feel like I spend most of my day problem solving. Give me rest today.
Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.– Matthew 11:28 (GNTD) - God, I’m annoyed with my family. They don’t even try to get along. Give me patience today.
May you be made strong with all the strength which comes from his glorious power, so that you may be able to endure everything with patience. And with joy give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to have your share of what God has reserved for his people in the kingdom of light.– Colossians 1:11-12 (GNTD) - God, I’ve wronged my family. I didn’t mean to hurt them, but I know I have. Forgive me today.
As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our sins from us.– Psalm 103:12 (GNTD) - God, I’m disappointed in my family. They let me down in a big way, and I’m feeling hurt. Help me forgive them today.
Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ.– Ephesians 4:32 (GNTD) - God, I need to have an honest conversation with my family. I know it won’t be easy, and I’m afraid they won’t respond well. Give me courage today.
Be strong, be courageous, all you that hope in the Lord.– Psalm 31:24 (GNTD) - God, loving my family often feels difficult. Help me to love them, regardless of my circumstances.
Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another.– Romans 12:9-10 (GNTD)
