We all experience crises in our own lives, from anxiety about money to stress in relationships. But sometimes, watching the reports of violence, war and crime in the daily news can feel just as overwhelming as the difficulties we experience every day. From the chaos in Iraq and Ukraine to the injustice in Ferguson, Mo., the crises in the world often leave us feeling paralyzed and helpless.
What can we do to right these wrongs? How can we work toward bringing the love and peace of Christ to earth?
Scripture repeatedly reminds us that no matter what else we do, we can pray. Here are 5 prayers from the book of Psalms that can help get you started in praying regularly for people in crisis around the globe or next door.
- May the king judge the poor fairly;
may he help the needy
and defeat their oppressors. —Psalm 72:4 (GNTD) - O Lord, don't stay away from me!
Come quickly to my rescue! — Psalm 22:19 (GNTD)
- The Lord protects his people;
he defends and saves his chosen king.
Save your people, Lord,
and bless those who are yours. — Psalm 28:8, 9 (GNTD) - May your constant love be with us, Lord,
as we put our hope in you. — Psalm 33:22 (GNTD)
- We fall crushed to the ground;
we lie defeated in the dust. Come to our aid!
Because of your constant love save us! — Psalm 44: 25, 26 (GNTD) - O God, do not keep silent;
do not be still, do not be quiet! — Psalm 83:1 (GNTD)
In addition to praying, you can also help by providing aid to Iraqi Christian families. Every $30 you are able to give will be used to provide an aid package of food, medicine and hygiene items for a family of 5 for a week, plus two Scripture items for children and adults.
