You walk up the driveway, praying that today will be different.

You open the door and spot your loved one on the couch, the once familiar sparkle in their eyes now gone. You stand in the doorway, wishing it was time to leave.

Hovering by the couch, you think of some light pleasantries. But, instead, you say nothing. It's too hard to have a normal conversation when you're struggling to hold back tears. You want to scream and hug your loved one all at once. But you try your best to remember what they were like before addiction took over.

Are you facing the pain of watching a loved one struggle with addiction?

Whether they're still battling addiction or in recovery, you intimately know the heartache of watching a friend or family member suffer from addiction. And you suffer, too. You vacillate between rage and compassion—and you can't shake the gnawing sense of guilt, like it's somehow your fault.

Facing a loved one's addiction can feel like it's too much to handle. In times like these, God offers us comfort and rest in his Word. He promises to listen to our worries. If you're struggling today, I invite you to open your Bible and meditate on these verses:

Psalm 34:18 (GNT)

The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope.

Psalm 147:3 (GNT)

[God] heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds.

Psalm 55:22a (GNT)

Leave your troubles with the Lord, and he will defend you;

Psalm 91:1-2 (GNT)

Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to him, "You are my defender and protector. You are my God; in you I trust."
