Money has a cruel way of disappearing when you need it most.
You spend weeks, months, years saving up for that new car or house or vacation. But then—just as your goal is in sight—the refrigerator breaks, there’s an unplanned hospital stay, you lose your job, you get an unexpected bill in the mail.
You dread logging into your bank account, but you finally muster up the courage. Sitting in the dim glow of your computer, you stare at your screen in disbelief.
Your throat tightens as your heart pounds in your ears. How will we get through this? you ask yourself. What else can I possibly do? You wonder if you’ll ever really know the comfort of not living paycheck-to-paycheck.
When the bank account is close to zero, anxiousness and fear can threaten to seize you and take control. It might feel impossible to trust in God’s goodness. It can seem almost foolish to believe that God is for you.
But Jesus tells us that God cares for us and will provide for our needs. To remember this truth, all we have to do is look up. Jesus says, Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds? (Matthew 6:26 CEV). We don’t have to worry about food and drink and clothes. Why not? Because, Jesus says, Your Father in heaven knows that you need all of these (6:32b).
God provides for your needs. Even if that statement doesn’t feel true today, you can ask God to help you believe it. Take a few moments to breathe deeply. Challenge yourself to reflect on the ways God reveals his love for you in Scripture. These 5 verses will get you started:
Psalm 94:19 (GNTD)
Whenever I am anxious and worried, you comfort me and make me glad.
Philippians 4:6 (GNTD)
Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart.
1 Peter 5:7 (GNTD)
Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (GNTD)
The Lord himself will lead you and be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you, so do not lose courage or be afraid.
Philippians 4:19 (GNTD)
And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs
