You sit at the kitchen table, running your fingers through you hair. You slowly clench and unclench your jaw. You think about bolting but know you have to do what you’re about to do.
Heart pounding, you finally push the “sign in” button. You think about looking away as your bank account information loads on the computer screen.
You knew what the numbers would be, but somehow you still feel slightly surprised as you get that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.
It’s not enough. It’s never enough, you think. You begin counting the days till your next paycheck, worrying about how you’ll manage another month of bills.
Are you dealing with the overwhelming stress of living paycheck-to-paycheck?
Maybe a new life transition—a cross-country move, a new baby, medical bills—has cut into your budget in a way you never anticipated. Or maybe you don’t have a paycheck at all, and you’re still waiting to find a reliable source of income. You wonder if you’ll ever find financial stability again.
It’s easy to allow yourself to drown in worry. But God’s character is stable when the bank account isn’t. God never changes. If you’re experiencing financial difficulty today, you can rely on what the Bible says about God’s character:
- God works for good.
We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 (GNTD) - God does not change in his goodness.
Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning. – James 1:17 (GNTD) - God is love.
For God is love. And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him. – 1 John 4:8b-9 (GNTD) - God will always be with you.
Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” – Hebrews 13:5 (GNTD)
